Ok, let’s just go ahead and get it out there….who doesn’t love an all-inclusive…that’s what I thought. BUT not ALL all-Inclusive resorts are created equal, and the one that lands on the my top list is without a doubt UNICO 20 87 in Riviera Maya.

Located a short hour from the Cancun international airport you are transported to a modern upscale resort known as Unico. This resort is incredibly secluded located in the beautiful area of the Riviera Maya. Unico is an ADULTS ONLY gourmet all inclusive.

TRAVEL TIP => Book a private transfer through the hotel, and they will be at the airport when you arrive. Very inexpensive and a private transfer; which means no waiting, no stops, and a quicker direct route to paradise.

As you pass through the gates (very secure and safe property) you are surrounded by beautiful Mayan jungle as you make your way to the resort. You are greeted by the friendly staff with a warm towel and a welcome drink and are escorted into the main lobby to begin check-in. As you check in (note: they come to you so sit back and relax) they just want you to enjoy and relax from the very first moment. The design at Unico is beyond fabulous. You even get to choose which scent you prefer from a set of four candles to be sprayed in your room in the evenings. Check-in took no longer than 15 minutes and then we were escorted to our suite.

VIBE: Modern luxury with a rustic vibe

ROOMS: Rooms are modern and luxurious with art from all local artist and designers. So much decoration inspo! All rooms have a Local Host that is available to help with anything you may need. Such a special touch. You can’t go wrong with any of the rooms but listed below are the different rooms, you can choose from. Also, EVERY (minus swim up) has an outdoor hot tub, which you can request be filled at any point. We took full advantage of this amazing amenity.

• Alcoba Swim-up Pool: Bottom floor, no hot tub with this one, but you get a gorgeous swim up pool.
• PURE® Alcoba: Specifically designed for allergy sufferers.
• Alcoba Ocean Front: This is where we stayed the first visit, and it couldn’t be more fabulous! We stayed on the 3rd floor and overlooked the palm trees and ocean.
• Alcoba Ocean View: We stayed here the second time we visited unico. Amazing room that overlooked the property. Every room has an ocean view which is great!
• Estancia Suite: 1 or 2 bedroom suites which also includes a large living room, expansive terrace, outdoor hot tub and ocean views.
• Villa 20°87°: 2 bedroom villa, creme de la creme!

FOOD: The food…OH, the food! We spent last fourth of July at Unico where they had a Michelin star chef takeover. It was incredible! On the property, there are 5 restaurants (3 sitdown/reservations, 1 buffet style, 1 cafe as well as casual pool snack bars including oven roasted pizza) Unico has BY FAR the BEST food of ANY all inclusive we have ever been to. All of the food is locally sourced, and literally, cater to all types of food preferences. One of our favorites was Asian inspired cuisine. I highly recommend trying each of the restaurants. You can even have your local host help schedule them. Also, if one night you don’t feel like going out for a meal sit back, relax, draw a bath, and enjoy room service (recommend the churros)

Buffet: This is NOT your typical buffet all inclusive! We ate at the gourmet buffet style restaurant for breakfast and some lunches. It includes vegan and gluten-free options.

DO: Whether you want to lounge by the pool, get in a great workout, or go on an excursion; Unico has something for everyone

POOLSIDE ACTIVITIES: There are multiple pools, so whether you want to party at the swim up bar or relax at the ‘quiet pool” there is a pool for that. There is ALWAYS something happening by the pool at Unico. They go above and beyond to make every experience special. Our favorite is all the performances they have by the pool. From breakdancers, Saxophonist, guitarist, and of course the DJ playing that gets you into the vibe. All the music is fantastic at Unico it reminds me of a beachy Kygo mix. So jump on a float, swim up to the bar, and have some fun!  They also have daily events such as Design your own complimentary hat, Tequila tastings, and make your own ceviche. 

TRAVEL TIP => Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat Mexico is HOT!! But if you do Unico provide hats in the room and on Wednesday they have professional customizable poolside hat painting…Such a cool touch! They also sell sunscreen at the gift shop as well.

WELLNESS: Unico offers a state of the art gym. Yes, I’m that person who works out on vacation. I mean I LOVE tacos and tequila, so I gotta balance it somehow. They also offer some very unique wellness options as well. Such as floating yoga, hydrospin, and water aerobics.

Our holistic fitness program is designed to adapt to your personalized routine. We offer personal training sessions, meditation and yoga, beachfront classes, and a state-of-the-art gym.

DRINKS: The cocktails are impeccably crafted and are the BEST I have ever had at an all-inclusive by far!! My absolute favorite was the spicy margaritas made outside the unico restaurant ! They use top shelf liquor and fresh ingredients. There is no comparison to any resort I have been to! They take incredible pride in their cocktails and it definitely shows! Another thing I love about the Drink situation at Unico is the wine is delicious! Of course, I typically go for Tequila while in Mexico, but I do like to have a glass with dinner, and of course champagne and mimosas in the morning…Hey I’m on vacation don’t judge.

I give this resort a top rating and have recommended it to many couples! Have fun, wear sunscreen, have a margarita for me! Cheers!
